Drive 1 — BIO airport to Elciego~1h 50m, mostly motorway via the AP-68. Arrive at Marqués de Riscal late afternoon, well within the 15:00 check-in window.

Drive 2 — Elciego to Bermeo~1h 50m on Monday 10 August. Coastal scenery in the last 30 minutes — straight to Hotel Nafarrola for the 15:30 check-in and the booked dinner at ROLA.

Drive 3 — Bermeo to BIO airport~45m on Friday 14 August.

Nights 5–8 · Hotel Nafarrola, BermeoA converted Basque farmhouse run by brothers Gaizka and Josu Goikoetxea, deep in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Half One · Rioja, 6–10 August

Vineyards, the Gehry building, slow lunches.

The hotel itselfWorth a half-day. The Frank Gehry exterior is the obvious draw, but the spa (Caudalíe Vinothérapie — wine-based treatments, the actual reason most people book), the bodega tour, and the 1860 Marqués de Riscal restaurant (Michelin-starred, on-site) earn an afternoon each.

Day tripsLaguardia (12 min drive) — medieval walled town on a hill, Rioja Alavesa heart, perfect for a long lunch. Haro (35 min) — the Rioja capital with the historic bodegas (CVNE, López de Heredia, Muga — Muga does the best tour). Vitoria-Gasteiz (40 min) — Basque Country's quiet cultural capital, good for an afternoon if rain.

Worth bookingThe 1860 Marqués de Riscal restaurant for one dinner. Bodegas Ysios in Laguardia for the Calatrava-designed winery tour. A late lunch at Asador Etxebarri-trained Asador Goiko in Elciego for grilled meats.

Half Two · Basque coast, 10–14 August

Surf, pintxos, slow.

Mundaka & BermeoThe hotel sits between the two — Bermeo is the working harbour town with the best market, Mundaka is the surf village with the famous left-hand wave (Game of Thrones' Dragonstone if Rian's interested). Walk down to Bermeo's Sunday morning fish market.

San SebastiánThe day trip. ~1h 15m drive east. Old Town pintxos crawl (Bar Néstor for the chuleta, La Cuchara de San Telmo for kid goat, Borda Berri for the kokotxas), Concha beach walk, the funicular up Monte Igueldo. Worth a full day, plan for a late return.

Asador EtxebarriTwenty minutes inland from the hotel, in Atxondo. Three-Michelin-star Basque grill — Bittor Arginzoniz cooks everything over wood embers. Notoriously hard to book; try via the website four months out. If we get a table, this is the trip's marquee meal.

OtherwiseThe Urdaibai Reserve walks (the hotel can advise routes), the small fishing villages of Elantxobe and Lekeitio for lunch, and one slow day at the hotel for the ROLA dinner on the 13th.
